Marketplace Plan Types
ACA Marketplace plans come in four metal tiers. Each tier covers the same essential health benefits, but they differ in how costs are shared between you and the insurance company.
Bronze Plans
Lowest monthly premium, highest out-of-pocket costs. Best if you're healthy and want protection against worst-case scenarios. The insurance company pays about 60% of healthcare costs on average.
Silver Plans
Moderate premiums and out-of-pocket costs. The most popular choice — and the only tier eligible for cost-sharing reductions if your income qualifies. The insurer covers about 70% of costs.
Gold Plans
Higher monthly premium, lower costs when you get care. A good choice if you visit the doctor often or take regular medications. The insurer covers about 80% of costs.
Platinum Plans
Highest monthly premium, lowest out-of-pocket costs. Best if you expect significant medical expenses or want the most predictable costs. The insurer covers about 90%.
When Can You Enroll?
The Marketplace has specific enrollment windows. Knowing when to act is just as important as choosing the right plan.
Open Enrollment
November 1 through January 15 each year. This is the main window when anyone can enroll in or change their Marketplace plan. Coverage typically starts January 1 or February 1 depending on when you sign up.
Special Enrollment
Qualifying life events — losing job-based coverage, getting married, having a baby, or moving to a new area — give you a 60-day window to enroll outside of Open Enrollment.
Medicaid & CHIP
If you qualify for Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program, you can enroll any time of year — there is no limited enrollment window for these programs.
Who Qualifies for Marketplace Coverage?
The Health Insurance Marketplace is available to most U.S. citizens and legal residents who are not currently incarcerated. You may use the Marketplace if you are self-employed, work for an employer that does not offer insurance, are between jobs, or are a young adult no longer on a parent's plan.
Many people qualify for financial assistance without realizing it. Premium tax credits are available for households earning between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level — and in many states, enhanced subsidies extend even further. We check your eligibility as part of every consultation, at no cost to you.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Choosing based on premium alone. The cheapest monthly payment often means higher costs when you actually need care. We help you look at the total picture — premiums, deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket maximums.
Not checking if your doctor is in-network. Marketplace plans use provider networks. If your preferred doctor or hospital is out of network, you could face significantly higher bills.
Missing the enrollment deadline. If you miss Open Enrollment and don't have a qualifying life event, you may have to wait an entire year for coverage. Don't leave it to the last minute.
Not reviewing your plan each year. Marketplace plans change annually — premiums, networks, and drug formularies can all shift. We review your options every year to make sure you still have the best plan.
